Part 1

Call for Peace

In the Name of Allah,

the Most Gracious, and the Most Merciful

ANALYSIS OF

Rt. Honourable Pope Benedict XVI

On 12 September 2006

May Allah have Mercy on the Souls of Mankind

Brothers and Sisters!

Assalam o Alleyykum!

Brothers and Sisters! This article is written in order to clarify the misconceptions in respect of thePersonality and Character’ of the Last Prophet’ Mohammed Ibne Abdullah (SAW) that emerge in the human minds for some reason or the other.

Brothers and Sisters! The recent incidents: publication of Cartoon’ and observations of Rt. Honourable Pope Benedict XVI are not new. Although, I have just put my foot in the field of writing and read books on religion, but I have not come across any writing where the misconceptions in respect of the Personality and Character’ of the ‘Last Prophet’ Hazrat Mohammed (SAW) are specifically clarified. With the Grace of Allah (SWT) I am taking this opportunity by writing this article where the message can be conveyed all over the world. This article shall be:

  • high commissioners of the consulates of the countries of the world to pass on to the respective Heads of States,

  • political parties

  • Scholars of different religions

  • religious organisations,

  • media,

  • friends through e mail to forward to their friends

  • etc.

Brothers and Sisters! As the article is being composed in response to Rt. Honourable Pope Benedict XVI observations in his speech during the tour of Southern Germany at the University of Regensburg about the personality of the Prophet Mohammed (SAW), I shall try to analyse the edited text of the extract of the speech.

Brothers and Sisters! The text of the extract of the speech published by newspaper Times dated 16 September 2006 on page no: 6 is as follows:

THE UNIVERSITY OF REGENSBURG ADDRESS

The Pope’s speech was entitled

Faith, Reason and the University.

This is an edited extract:

I was reminded of all this’ recently, when I read the edition by Professor Theodore Khoury (Munster) of part of the dialogue carried on, perhaps in 1391, by the erudite Byzantine Emperor Manuel II Paleologus and an educated Persian on the subject ofChristianity’ and ‘Islam’, and the ‘truth’ of both.

The dialogue ranges widely over the ‘structures of faith’ contained in the Bible and in the Qur’an…In the seventh conversation the emperor touches the theme of the holy war’. The emperor must have known that ‘Surah (Quranic chapter) 2, 256′ reads:

There is no compulsion in religion.

According to the experts, this is one of the Surah of the early period, when Mohammed (SAW) was still powerless and under threat. But naturally the emperor also knew the instructions, developed later and recorded in the Qur’an, concerning holy war… He addresses his interlocutor with a startling brusqueness on the central question’ about the relationship between ‘religion and violence’ saying:

Show me just what Mohammed (SAW) brought that was new, and there you will find things evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached.

The emperor, having expressed himself so forcefully, goes on to explain the reason why spreading the faith through violence is something unreasonable. Violence is incompatible with the nature of Allah and the nature of the soul.

‘Allah’, he says: “is not pleased by blood – and not acting reasonably… is contrary to Allah’s nature. Faith is born of the soul, not the body. Whoever would lead someone to faith needs the ability to speak well and to reason properly, without violence and threats… To convince a reasonable soul, one does not need a strong arm, or weapons, or any other means of threatening a person with death…”

The decisive statement in this argument against ‘violent conversion’ is this: not to act in accordance with reason is contrary to Allah’s Nature. Theodore Khoury observes:

For the emperor, as a Byzantine shaped by ‘Greek philosophy’, this is self evident.

But for Muslim teaching, Allah is absolutely transcendent. His will is not bound up with any of our categories, even that of rationality. At this point, as far as understanding of Allah and thus the practice of religion is concerned, we are faced with an unavoidable dilemma. Is the conviction that acting unreasonably contradicts Allah’s Nature merely a Greek idea, or is it always and intrinsically true?

John began the prologue of his Gospel with the words:

This is the very word used by the emperor: Allah acts, with logos. Logos means reason and word – reason which is creative and capable of self-communication, precisely as reason. A profound encounter of faith and reason is taking place here, between genuine enlightenment and religion… This inner rapprochement between biblical faith and Greek philosophical inquiry was an event of decisive importance not only from the standpoint of the history of religions, but also from that of world history…

Given this convergence, it is not surprising that Christianity, despite its origins and some significant developments in the East, took on its historically decisive character in Europe. In the Western world it is widely held that only positivistic reason and the forms of philosophy based on it are universally valid. Yet the world’s profoundly religious cultures see this exclusion of the divine from the universality of reason as an attack on their most profound convictions. The West has long been engaged by this aversion to the questions which underlie its rationality, and can only suffer great harm thereby. The courage to engage the breadth of reason, and not the denial of its grandeur – this is the programme with which a theology grounded in biblical faith enters into the debates of our time. “Not to act reasonably, not to act with logos, is contrary to the nature of Allah,” said Manuel II, according to his under-standing of Allah. It is to these great logos, this breadth of reason, that we invite our partners in the dialogue of cultures.

Brothers and Sisters! It seems reasonable to write the meanings of the words which can help to understand the context of the above extract. Should a reader come across a word which is not in this dictionary, please consult your dictionary.

OBSERVATIONS

Brothers and Sisters! It had been much more beneficial if the text of the whole speech of Rt. Hon. Pope Benedict XVI had been translated into English language that would have depicted the perspective of:

I was reminded of all ‘this’ recently,

Brothers and Sisters! However, it appears that the extract depicts the following aspects:-

  • Allah forbid, The Last Prophet Mohammed (SAW) brought:

  • evil,

  • inhuman behaviour,

  • Verse 2, 256 was revealed in the initial period when Mohammed (SAW) were weak and powerless and under threat from the non believers.

  • Islam has not been promoted with reason,

  • Islam was spread by the power of Sword,

  • Violence is contrary to the nature of Allah.

Brothers and Sisters! Let us make an analysis of each aspect individually.

DID

PROPHET MOHAMMED (SAW) BRING

‘EVIL’?

Brothers and Sisters! Lets us see what axes of ‘evils’ are?

Brothers and Sisters! Axes of Evils are:

  • Illicit intercourse that leads to pornography, rape, child abuse, pedophilia, homosexuality, lesbianism etc.
  • Use of intoxicants that leads to loss of sense, incorrect decisions, selfishness, being cruel, emergence of enmity etc.
  • Gambling that leads to being capitalistic minded, effect and impact on social and matrimonial life etc.
  • Financial Interest leads to infringement of rights

Brothers and Sisters! Before the Prophet Mohammed (SAW) were commissioned the above axes of evils’ were prevalent all over the world at a very vast scale where:

  • woman had no rights whatsoever,

  • woman was treated worse than a slave

  • woman had no share in the inheritance,

  • etc.

Brothers and Sisters! The Prophet Mohammed (SAW) received revelation from Allah and passed on to the people by setting examples. The relevant Verses of the Qur’an are:

TO PROTECT THE CHASTITY OF THE WOMEN

Translation Surah An Nur Ayat no 30 – 31

In the Name of Allah,

the Most Gracious, and the Most Merciful

Tell the believing men to lower their gaze (from looking at forbidden things), and protect their private parts (from illegal sexual acts). That is purer for them. Verily, Allah is all aware of what they do.

And tell the believing women to lower their gaze (from looking at forbidden things), and protect their private part (from illegal sexual acts) and not to show off their adornment except only that which is apparent (like both eyes for necessity to see the way, or outer palms of hands or one eye or dress like veil, gloves, head-cover, apron),

and to draw their veils all over Juyubihinna (i.e. their bodies, faces, necks, and bosoms) and not to reveal their adornment except to their husbands, or their fathers, or their husband’s fathers, or their sons, or their husband’s sons, or their brothers or their brother’s sons, or their sister’s sons, or their (Muslim) women (i.e. their sister in Islam), or the (female) slaves whom their right hands possess, or old male servants who lack vigour, or small children who have no sense of feminine sex.

And let them not stamp their feet so as to reveal what they hide of their adornment. And all of you beg Allah to forgive you all, O believers that you may be successful.

Translation Surah Al Ahzab Ayat no 59

In the Name of Allah,

the Most Gracious, and the Most Merciful

O’ Prophet! Tell your wives and your daughters and the women
of the believers to draw their cloaks (veils) all over their bodies (i.e.) screen themselves completely except the eyes or one eye to see the way). That will be better, that they should be known (as free respectable woman) so as not to be annoyed. And Allah is Ever Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

Translation Surah Al Ahzab Ayat no 32 – 33

In the Name of Allah,

the Most Gracious, and the Most Merciful

O wives of the Prophet! You are not like any other women. If you keep your duty (to Allah), then be not be soft in speech, lest he in whose heart is a disease (of hypocrisy, or evil desire adultery) should be moved with desire, but speak in an honourable manner.

And stay in your houses, and do not display yourself like that of times of ignorance, and perform As Salat and give Zakat and obey Allah.

Brothers and Sisters! If we look at the history we will see that where the boundaries of Islamic state expanded the chastity of women’ was protected while following the Guidance’ of Allah and the Teachings’ of Prophet Mohammed (SAW).

Brothers and Sisters! With the passage of time the sect of the slave of sensual satisfaction’, gradually, brought the woman again out of the house where the woman was woman of the house and preparing themasonries’ of the future, where the women stopped following the ‘Guidance’ of Allah and Teachings’ of the Prophet Mohammed (SAW), and now the women is every where:

  • offices, factories, red light areas, parlours, massage houses, pornography, modeling, casinos, night clubs, advertisements etc.,

  • the newspapers and magazines which were considered respectable, now are no different then the Sun’ and ‘News of the World’ newspapers which are published in England,

  • openly the affairs of the tycoons, politicians are published in the newspapers. magazines,

  • ‘heads of the states’ ‘leaders’ of the political parties and cabinet ministers have affairs with their staff and otherwise and still they are immune from any prosecution,

  • the promotion of sex led to homosexuality’ and ‘lesbianism’, child abuse, rape, pedophilia

  • the front page of most of the newspapers have nude’ picture of young women,

  • most of the magazines all over the world including Islamic countries are full of women photos and pictures in nude form.

  • etc.

SHARE IN THE INHERITANCE FOR WOMEN

Brothers and Sisters! Before the commissioning of the Prophet Mohammed (SAW), according to the narrations, woman had no right in the inheritance as a daughter, mother, and wife. Allah revealed to the Prophet (SAW) about the distribution of the property left by the deceased.

Translation Surah n Nisa Ayat no 11 – 14

In the Name of Allah,

the Most Gracious, and the Most Merciful

Allah commands you as regards your children’s (inheritance): to the male, a portion equal to that of two females: if (there are) only ‘daughter’, two or more, their share is two-thirds of the inheritance; if only one, her share is half.

For parents, a sixth share of inherence to each if the deceased left children; if no children, and parents are the (only) heirs, the mother has a third; if the deceased left brothers or (sisters), the ‘mother’ has sixth. (the distribution in all cases is) after the payment of legacies he may have bequeathed or debts. You know not which of them, whether your parents or your children, are nearest to you in benefit; (these fixed shares) are nearest to you in benefit; (these fixed shares) are ordained by Allah. And Allah is Ever All-Knower.

In that which your wives leave, your share is a half if they have no child; but if they leave a child, you get a fourth of that which they leave after payment of legacies that they may have bequeathed or debts.

In that which you leave, their (your wives) share is a fourth if you leave no child; but if you leave a child, they get an eighth of that which you leave after payment of legacies that you may have bequeathed or debts. If the man or woman whose inheritance is in question has left neither ascendants nor descendants, but has left a brother or a sister’, each one of the two gets sixth; but if more than two, they share in a third, after payment of legacies he (or she) may have bequeathed or debts, so that no loss is caused (to anyone). This is a commandment from Allah; and Allah; and Allah is All-Knowing, Most-forbearing.

These are the limits (set by) Allah (or ordainments as regards laws of inheritance), and whosoever obeys Allah and His Messenger (Mohammed (SAW)) will be admitted to Gardens under which rivers flow (in Paradise), to abide therein, and that will be the great success.

And whosoever disobeys Allah and His Messenger (Mohammed (SAW)), and transgresses His limits, He (Allah) will cast him into the Fire, to abide therein; and he shall have a disgraceful torment.

Brothers and Sisters! The woman’s relationship with a man is of daughter, sister, mother, and wife. Allah (SWT) has determined their shares revealed to the Prophet Mohammed (SAW) as per the context and substance of the above Ayats of the Qur’an. Allah has warned that if the limits are not abided by, then the destination is Hell’.

THE WOMEN IS PROTECTED FROM ‘FALSE ALLEGATION’

Brothers and Sisters! In accordance with the narrations before the commissioning of the Prophet Mohammed (SAW) men used to abuse their wives by accusing them having adultery’. Allah (SWT) gave them the protection and revealed to the Prophet Mohammed (SAW):

Translation Surah An Nur Ayat no 4 – 10

In the Name of Allah,

the Most Gracious, and the Most Merciful

And those who accuse chaste woman, and produce not four witnesses, flog them with eighty stripes, and reject their testimony forever. They indeed are the Fasiqun’ (liars, rebellious, disobedient to Allah).

Except those who repent thereafter and do righteous deeds; (for such) verily. Allah is Oft- forgiving, Most Merciful.

And for those who accuse their wives, but have no witness except themselves, let the testimony of one of them be four testimonies (i.e. testify four times) by Allah that he is one of those who speak the truth.

And the fifth (testimony should be) the invoking of the Curse of Allah on him if he be of those who tell a lie (against her).

But it shall avert the punishment (of stoning to death) from her, if she bears witness four times by Allah, that he (her husband) is telling a lie.

And the fifth (testimony) should be that the Wrath of Allah be upon her if he (her husband) speaks the truth.

Brothers and Sisters! Alhamdu’lillah! Allah (SWT) revived the due respect to the women by revelation of ‘His Word’ i.e. the Qur’an to the ‘Last Prophet’ Mohammed Ibne Abdullah (SAW). Should not the women be grateful to Allah and His Prophet Mohammed (SAW)?

In view of the above the Prophet Mohammed (SAW) brought the protection and preservation of chastity and respect for women but she has once again been put in such a Mess which is, most likely, no where near to what was 1400 years ago before the commissioning of the Last Prophet Mohammed (SAW).

The irony is that, this selfish man has brainwashed her in such a way that she still thinks she is successful.

Does this not depict that she is so simple and Naïve that she does not realizes that she has been made a fool.

Woman has great talents, but for the reason that she has a simple mind, Allah has given superiority to man over woman.

INTOXICANTS

Brothers and Sisters! Use of any intoxicant leads to be away from the ‘Guidance’ of Allah. When one is away from the Guidance’ of Allah he will fall in the ‘well of digression’ where he commits every kind of act which satisfies his ‘lust’. To get the mankind out of the digression, Allah revealed the Ayats of His Word’ i.e. the Qur’an to the Prophet Mohammed (SAW)

Translation Surah Al Baqrah Ayat no 219

In the Name of Allah,

the Most Gracious, and the Most Merciful

They ask you (O Mohammed (SAW)) concerning alcoholic drink and gambling. Say: “In them is great sin and (some) benefits for men, but the sin of them is greater than their benefit.”

Translation Surah An Nisa Ayat no 43

In the Name of Allah,

the Most Gracious, and the Most Merciful

O you who believe! Approach not As-Salat (the Prayer) when you are in drunken state until you know (the meaning) of what you utter.

Translation Surah Al Ma’idah Ayat no 90 – 92

In the Name of Allah,

the Most Gracious, and the Most Merciful

O you who believe! Intoxicants (all kinds of alcoholic drinks), and gambling and Al-Ansab, and Al-Azlam (arrows for seeking luck or decision) are an abomination of Shaitan’s (Satan) handiwork. So avoid (strictly all) that (abomination) in order that you may be successful.

Shaitan (Satan) wants only to excite enmity and hatred between you with intoxicants (alcoholic drinks) and gambling, and hinder you from remembrance of Allah and from As-Salat (the Prayer). So will you not then abstain?

And obey Allah and the Messenger (Mohammed (SAW)), and beware (of even coming near to drinking or gambling or Al-Ansab or Al Azlam) and fear Allah. Then if you turn away, you should know that it is Our Messenger’s duty to convey (the message) in the clearest way.

Brothers and Sisters! Allah has clearly warned the mankind the effect and impact of the use of intoxicants and the consequences thereof through ‘His Revelation’ to the Prophet Mohammed (SAW).

How can The Prophet Mohammed (SAW)

be said to bring evil?

Brothers and Sisters! As the Muslim Ummah digressed from the ‘Guidance’ of Allah and the ‘Teachings’ of the Prophet Mohammed (SAW) this evil is spread all over the world including Islamic countries and, virtually, is no more considered a sin, while at the same time limits are imposed.

For example:

No 1

Brothers and Sisters! The airline jurisdiction does not allow the pilots’ to consume ‘alcoholic drink’ at least ten hours before they are due to fly the aero plane.

No2

Brothers and Sisters! I listen to BBC radio 4. It can be assumed that the broadcasters’ are not allowed to consume ‘alcoholic drink’ a certain number of hours before they present their programme. If they do then they would not be able to read the news, have interviews with the politicians and otherwise, and question and cross question them.

Are these limitations in line with the Guidance of Allah?

O you who believe! Approach not As-Salat (the Prayer) when you are in drunken state until you know (the meaning) of what you utter.

GAMBLING

Brothers and Sisters! Gambling leads to create the love for the wealth that in turn leads to create enmity among the friends and family members and infringements of rights of other people.

Brothers and Sisters! Allah has revealed its features along with the use of intoxicants mentioned above.

As the mankind is away from the ‘Teachings’ of the Prophet Mohammed (SAW), the gambling has become prevalent in the whole world in different forms including Islamic countries.

FINANCIAL INTERST

Brothers and Sisters! Financial interest is the root’ of the ‘Capitalist System’ that gives rise to inflation and affects the distribution of wealth’ that leads to create two classes: rich’ and ‘poor’ thereby affecting the Morals’ of the society. The revelations in respect ‘financial interest’ in the Qur’an are as follows:-

Translation Surah Al Baqrah Ayat no 275 – 279

In the Name of Allah,

the Most Gracious, and the Most Merciful

Those who eat Riba (usury) will not stand (on the Day of Resurrection) except like the standing of a person beaten by Shaitan (Satan) leading him to insanity. That is because they say: “Trading is only like Riba (usury)” whereas Allah has permitted trading and forbidden Riba (usury). So whosoever receives an admonition from his Lord and stops eating Riba (usury) shall not be punished for the past; his case is for Allah (to judge); but whoever returns [to Riba (usury)], such are the dwellers of the Fire – they will abide therein.

Allah will destroy Riba (usury) and will give increase for Sadaqat (deeds of charity, alms) and Allah likes not the disbelievers, sinner.

Truly, those who believe, and do deeds of righteousness, and give Zakat, they will have their reward with their Lord. On them shall be no fear nor shall they grieve.

O you who believe! Be afraid of Allah and give up what remains (due to you) from Riba (usury) (from now onward), if you are (really) believers.

And if you do not do it, then take a notice of war from Allah and His Messenger but if you repent, you shall have your capital sums. Deal not unjustly (by asking more than your capital sum), and you shall not be dealt with unjustly (by receiving less than your capital sums).

CONCLUSION

Brothers and Sisters! As above are thebasic evils’ that give rise to the branches of other evils. Alhamdu’lillah! Being the Prophet of Allah, the Prophet Mohammed (SAW) eradicated the roots of the above evils and the history tells that as long as the His (SAW) Teachings’ were followed there had been Peace and Harmony’ prevailing. Even in this day of age the governments of the countries realize the hidden evilness’ of the above concepts and devise policies and determine the legal jurisdiction that people must not indulge in these activities at a large scale. If they do, they will be punished by fines and/or imprisonment.

OBSERVATION

RE – RT. HON. POPE BENEDICT’S REFERENCE

TO

BYZANTINE EMPEROR MANUEL II

Show me just what Mohammed (SAW) brought that was new, and there you will find things evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached.

Brothers and Sisters! Rt. Hon. Pope Benedict XVI reference, if taken in context of his edited text of his speech under the topic Faith, Reason and the University then it can be derived that he did not mean to ‘offend’ the Muslims nor this depict that he holds a ‘grudge’ against the Prophet Mohammed (SAW). The available edited text does not contain any further reference’ to Prophet Mohammed (SAW) personality and character.

However, there appears to be an error of judgment on the part of Rt. Hon. Pope Benedict that he should not have taken, even, the view of the Byzantine Emperor Manuel II as it was a ‘dialect’ between him and the Persian Muslim.

It is a natural phenomenon that in this type of dialogue each party tries to manipulate and distort the facts in order to hold an upper hand. Moreover, the Persian Muslim must have retaliated and answered where he must have clarified the misconception he heard in Emperor’s statement. If the author has not written a reply in the book then the book is not composed without prejudice.

Brothers and Sisters! Let us further analyze the edited text of Rt. Hon. Pope Benedict XVI address:

The dialogue ranges widely over the ‘structures of faith’ contained in the Bible and in the Qur’an…In the seventh conversation the emperor touches the theme of the ‘holy war’. The emperor must have known that ‘Surah (Quranic chapter) 2, 256′ reads:

There is no compulsion in religion.

According to the experts, this is one of the Surah of the early period, when Mohammed (SAW) was still powerless and under threat. But naturally the emperor also knew the instructions, developed later and recorded in the Qur’an, concerning holy war

Brothers and Sisters! The context of the above extract depicts that the Emperor assumed to have a comprehensive knowledge of the Qur’an i.e. he knew the meaning of the Ayat 2, 256 and the ‘time’ of its revelation and also ‘further instruction’ developed later and recorded in the Qur’an.

Brothers and Sisters! If the Emperor assumed to have a comprehensive knowledge of the Qur’an then he must have read the above Ayat of the Qur’an which are stated above to eradicate the evils which destroys the Morals’ of the people. Because one of the method of Promotion of Islam is to enter into war that leads to killings, so the Emperor, to gain an upper hand made the statement:

Show me just what Mohammed (SAW) brought that was new, and there you will find things evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached.

Brothers and Sisters! For the sake of argument, it can be assumed that the Emperor to secure an upper hand over his Interlocutor wanted to refer to the spread of Islam by sword as an evil and inhumane act. But his statement meant that, Allah forbid, Mohammed (SAW) brought every kind of evil and to spread Islam by sword was one of the evils. Obviously, this had intense reflection on the minds and hearts of the Muslims that led to protests world wide in Islamic countries.

Brothers and Sisters! At this point it seems reasonable to judge that if the Promotion of Islam was with ‘reason’ or with ‘sword’?

Brothers and Sisters! Let us take a glance over the history since the time of Hazrat Adam (PBUH).

  • As Hazrat Adam (PBUH) while living in Paradise disobeyed the Command of Allah, He and his wife were sent in this world to spend their lives in accordance with the Guidance’ of Allah and the implication was that they must also educate and train their offspring accordingly.

  • The element of Psyche’ digressed the offspring where some of them started living their lives away from the Guidance’ of Allah and developed ‘self made’ principles and rules and regulations to spend their day to day life.

  • Allah used to commission Prophets who would repudiate the changes and adaptation in the ‘Guidanceof Allah and Teachings’ of the Prophets, so that the mankind reverts on the Right Track’.

  • As the offspring of Hazrat Adam (PBUH) spread over different parts of the earth, so Prophets used to be commissioned in every vicinity.

  • According to narrations more or less 124,000 Prophets were commissioned until 1400 years ago before the commissioning of the Last Prophet’ Mohammed Ibne Abdullah (SAW).

  • The followers of the earlier Prophets corrupted the Guidance’ of Allah and ‘Teachings’ of the Prophets which resulted digression in every aspect of life.

  • Allah is Merciful. The world had to come to an end. To save the mankind from the Fire of Hell, as there had been digression in every sphere of life, Allah commissioned the Last Prophet’ Mohammed (SAW) 1400 years ago.

  • The field determined by Allah for the Prophet Mohammed (SAW) was the whole world until the Day of Resurrection.

  • The method determined for the reversion towards the Right Path was to introduce the ‘Guidance’ of Allah was with reason’.

when the people were approached to believe in the ‘Lone Entity’
of Allah, their belief on more than one ‘Ilah’ (god) in the form of idols and otherwise was repudiated that these are made of stone, how they can listen, see, understand and be of any help to you. The people who would understand this conception they will embrace Islam and then while living their lives in accordance with the Teachings’ of the Prophet (SAW) the Hikmah’ (Prudence) of Allah’s ‘Guidance’ becomes apparent whereby the level of their Eman and Yaqeen’ on the Entity of Allah’ gets strengthen.

  • For thirteen years, in spite of the hard work, very few people embraced Islam and eventually, it led to migrate to Madina.

  • There had been wars with the non – believers where most of the time Muslims overpowered the non believers and the people started embracing Islam that gave power and strength to Muslims.

  • In the year 8 Hijri, Alhamdu’lillah! Makkah was conquered where people started embracing Islam in great number.

  • As the field for the Revival of Islam’ was the whole world following method was adopted as per the Guidance’ of Allah:

  • Letters were written to the Heads of the States to embrace Islam. When the head of state showed willingness to embrace Islam, he was briefed with ‘reasons’ as to what Islam represents and what are the consequences should he not embrace Islam and what will be the rewards if he embraces Islam. Obviously, there must have been questions from the people, and they were given satisfactory answers, before they had embraced Islam

Head of the State is the key’ figure as he is the representative of the whole nation. If he embraces Islam then he is taught the Teachings’ of the Guidance’ of Allah where when he applies those in practice and promotes them, the people of the nation also follow him.

The head of the state is advised that if for some reason or the other he does not embrace Islam, as he is representative of the whole nation, therefore he will be regarded a hindrance to convey the Message of Allah’ to every inhabitant of his country.

As the responsibility also lies on the shoulders of the Last Prophet’ to convey the Message of Allah’ to every human being on the earth until the Day of Resurrection’, the next step is, a proposition is made to the Head of the State that he becomes Zimmi’ of the Islamic State. Under this proposition the Islamic State assumes the responsibility for their protection and preservation from outside powers.

The prudence behind this proposition is that Islamic Army’ will reside in the state for their protection where they will live their lives in accordance with the Guidance’ of Allah and Teachings’ of the Prophet Mohammed (SAW), where the non Muslims will be inclined to embrace Islam as they have observed the invitation to embrace Islam with reason’ i.e. in practical form.

Where the ‘head of the state’ neither embraces Islam nor becomes a ‘Zimmi’, then he is advised that to approach the people of the state the hindrance need to be eliminated i.e. the head of the state and that leads to ‘war’ between to Muslims and Non Muslims.

  • Allah has given His permission to lodge war against the Head of the State and not against the inhabitants of the State. As soon as the non Muslim army is overpowered, the Muslims are commanded to stop killing. The first Ayat in respect of holy war’, as per narration, was revealed in the ‘6 Hijri’ for the Promotion of Islam.

Translation Surah Al Baqrah Ayat no 190

In the Name of Allah,

the Most Gracious, and the Most Merciful

And fight in the Way of Allah those who fight you, but transgress not the limits. Truly, Allah likes not the transgressors.

Brothers and Sisters! The perspective of the revelation of the above Verses is as follows:

When the Prophet Mohammad (SAW), 6 Hijri went for Umrah with around 1500 Sahaba (RTU) they were stopped at the site Hudebah. There was a risk that the Mushrekeen may lodge a war against the Muslims.

At the time there was no revelation in respect of Promotion of Islam with war’. Moreover it was the month of Ze’Qadah’, when even in the days of Jahiliah’ (ignorance), it was considered to be a pious month and it had been determined that there shall be no war in this month. The Sahaba (RTU) were confused as what to do, should the Mushrekeen lodge a war against them.

At that time the above Ayat was revealed to the Prophet (SAW). The context of the Ayat is that should the Mushrekeen attack you then you can fight back, but were warned at the same time, not to transgress the limits i.e. not to kill children, women and old people.
